1.3 Atelier Workshop 1

Yasser introduced us to this simple yet effective exercise where we fill in the three blanks.

This allowed us to have a purpose and a problem to tackle with so that our designs will have depth and useful.

I am researching ____ because I want to find out about _____ in order to solve ______ .

  1. I am researching CSR and plant nurseries because I want to find out about their greenwashing techniques in order to solve the plant hoarding issue.

  2. I am researching Biophilic design and healthcare because I want to find out about palliative care in order to implement the benefits of Biophilia to better improve patients' welfare.

  3. I am researching dystopia and reality because I want to find out about the impact of dystopian films on humans in order to solve the impressionable minds of pre-teens.

  4. I am researching speculative dystopian shows because I want to find out about the effects on thoughts and morals in order to bring awareness.

How to Design your Research???

Remember that your project is a mix of design and communication.

The research process → narrow your pick and define a specific niche → identify a gap in literature/ research problem → develop research questions based on what you need to find out → design research that fits the purpose: to answer your questions → prepare your research proposal.

Mind the Gap

  • Repeating patterns

  • Series of events

  • Problems experienced by others

  • An area that has a scope for more research

Contextualise

  • find a problem

  • what part of it are you trying to solve?

  • how it happens, by whom, why and when

  • how much are other people affected by it

  • what are your objectives

  • how are you going to solve to answer your question and achieve your goals

  • has someone tried to solve the problem before and how can you add value

To be innovative...

is to not invent something new, but instead, you will be contributing something new to the table

Be entrepreneurial

  • creating value to people and your needs

  • be innovative in your research

  • be organised in your research

  • be responsible

  • question everything and do not assume

  • mix your sources and information

  • get to the bottom of your information chain

  • ask for help :")

Peer presentation advice and tips

  • Kenneth's Ethical Design Allowing kids to have more interaction and control over their social media identity instead of their parents.

    • Although some things may be obvious, it is good to not assume the key points and do question

    • Try not to confuse yourself more with unnecessary jargon

    • The strategic trajectory on how to plan your application out

  • Hannah's Non-verbal communication through street dances

    • good to think about collaboration with students from other disciplines

    • need to think of a clear target audience

    • sometimes if the topic is too unique, there might not be enough space to expand upon, so maybe the next step is a step back

  • Cheyenne's Flex culture and use luxury brands aesthetics through consumer's identity with semiotics

    • there might be many problems that can come up from the topic in mind to one can prioritise and try to to solve the more urgent problem

  • Bella's Widespread influence of dystopian film on people especially on teens

    • be aware of different cultures instead of just focusing on the contemporary western view

    • dangerous mirroring of eastern to western culture

    • need to be clear with your problem

    • film has the essential element of narrative

  • Hanz's The use of punk aesthetics to solve critical racial issues with design activism

    • how punk culture is a form of social change

    • limiting the solution to a big problem like racial tensions to just one solution of punk culture might be a bit too constricting

    • can change to how punk can show an example to contribute to race

Visual Respository

  1. intro

    1. key news articles

    2. projects (past and present)

    3. existing trend reports

  1. object of study

    1. what is the subject matter

    2. design communities or design observation

    3. key reports

    4. is there a study on a particular phenomenon that you will like to explore

    5. podcasts, websites, any media

  1. Controlling idea

    1. key scholars, readers, experts

    2. importance or significance

it is important to build knowledge - Yasser
  • dynamic and different

  • insights, colours, images, textures

  • not just a collection, but you need to be able to embed content and context

  • can toggle information when clicking on the image?

  • don't want to be a traditional website

  • use themes as a way to bridge

don't rest on your laurels - Yasser
