1.8 Research Local's Perspective of Biophilia

Although there were many design inspirations for my book, I was more interested in the interviews that were showcased in the exhibition.

Conversation with Karl Png and Woo Qiyun

  1. Many people are aware of environmental issues but don't know what to do with it or information are tough to understand and filter through (both)

  2. There are different ways to help to preserve nature. You can start in a place/ medium where you are comfortable and can stretch what you can do (Qiyun)

  3. You cannot love what you cannot understand, so Karl thought that knowing and understanding the nature around you is the first step to preserve something you love.

  4. We are one with nature and we belong with nature

  5. As people, we belong to a wider nature.

Conversation with Dr Neo Mei Lin and Dr Zeehan Jaafar

  1. They talked more about preserving natural habitats in Singapore, more specifically the water-body portion.

  2. They do this by making a ground-up initiative document called the Blue Plan and sent to govt and give several recommendations.

  3. Many new events and activities that came from the 2018 copy

  4. Dr Mei Lin felt that bringing awareness to the younger audience was when she felt most meaningful especially when they continued her work themselves.

  5. Dr Mei Lin feels like we are not the "masters" of nature but we are little cogs of the huge ecosystem hence humbling ourselves

  6. Dr Jaafar should make it sustainable not just for us but for the greater system

  7. Dr Jaafar wants to see the conservation of nature as not just a countrywide thing but a regional or worldwide effort. As nature has no country lines

Interview with Dr Adrian Loo

  1. The importance of Nature parks as it puts less human pressure on the native forest as they become buffers from the urbanisation and human presence

    1. They are leverages from being slated for development

  1. "When you get to know something so intimately, you naturally want to protect"

  2. The one million tree movement helped with the ease of livibility in Singapore. One of the most impt one is the heat (tropical and climate change)and how trees can cool down though transpiration

  3. Our waywards streets become conservation parks as it has become new habitats for the endangered species (Kopsia Singapurasis had only 10-20 individuals left. And they were grafted and proporgated ard)

  4. Looking towards the future generation when we plant trees as how LKY started the Garden City movement which has come to pass
